Desinging Tips for Making Small Spaces Feel LARGER

Planning and designing a small space can be challenging but fun at the same time. You do not need to sacrifice in character and style when living in a comparatively small space, whether a loft, studio apartment or any other small apartment or house. On the contrary, when considering the following smart tips and ideas from interior designer Annette Frommer, you can make your dwelling inviting, beautiful  and chic too, while making it feel much larger too.

Understand your space

It is important to understand you space. Draw-up a plan in order to comprehend the dimensions of the space so that you effectively plan the layout and design.

Declutter

Clutter creates mind fog!  It muddles thinking and does the exact opposite of promoting peace and tranquility especially in a small space. You can’t walk on a floor full  of toys, clothes, too much furniture etc. De-clutter , keep only the essentials and keep the floor clear of obstacles

Invest in a good closet, armoire or chest of drawers

Storage is essential in any space, especially in a small space. A good closet or chest of drawers for clothes, toys, linen or anything else, is essential.

Use reflective materials

Choose white or light- colored walls and shiny tiles. These materials reflect light. Light bounces off these, making for a roomier space.   According to interior designer Annette Frommer “ Even-toned rooms deceive the eye into thinking they're more expansive than they  really are. If you add and play with a  variety of fabrics and textures your space will offer interest and style”.

Mirror mirror on the wall

Mirrors are an amazing component no matter what. They are the  oldest trick in the book and one of the best. Whether in a large space or a small space, mirrors not only reflect light around the room , they also give the illusion of a much larger space. Nowadays mirrors come in an abundance of styles, colors, sizes….they are not only a  decorative element  but a tool to be used. Think about lining a wall with a large mirror or create a gallery wall of distinct sizes and shapes. According to interior designer Annette Frommer “  Mirrors can add a lot of style and character  to any space and don’t necessarily take up a lot of space “ .

Light – up

Small spaces often feel grim and dark, due to lack of windows, or fewer windows than one would want.  In order to make up for missing natural light especially in a cramped space like a bathroom with a minute window, it is important to make use of proper lighting. The possibilities are endless.  Use light sources in every room, especially striking and eye-catching decorative light fixtures. Sconces save space as opposed to side lamps on side tables, and a ‘wow’ flush mount can really make the room.

As Frommer says  “Bad lighting will ruin even the most gorgeous space. Good lighting will make even the smallest space feel stunning”.

A small dining table is a great option

Small round tables make for great dining rooms. They can be used not only for breakfast nooks. By abandoning the large dining table you can give yourself a lot of extra space./

To sum up – it is so easy to overlook a space just because it is small. Don’t think that .such a space has no room for décor. On the contrary,—it is well worth elevating a small space by personalizing it with elements that give it chic and a lot of punch.
