Reflections

‘Reflect’ on the magic of mirrors. Mirrors are not only functional; they are a fantastic design element that always catch the eye. You can get really artistic when choosing a mirror since they come in a plethora of shapes and sizes, and in many finishes such as wood, wrought iron, brass, glass and more. Mirrors create a sense of space, they light up a room when hung close to a window, they hide wall defects, and they make grand statements. Every grand home has a versatile mirror.

Statements

Statement details do the trick. Whether a statement ottoman, a statement chandelier or a statement headboard, if the item has that 'wow' factor that makes an impact, it's a statement detail.

Turnarounds

No matter how precisely you plan your design, there will always be unexpected surprises once you begin building or renovating. Take these in your stride. Do not panic. Take them into account when scheduling your timelines. Oh, and here’s an interesting fact - often these surprises end up being contributing factors to an amazing project result, when you least expect them to...

Unclutter

I have seen so many homes that are too cluttered, too ornate and too complicated. No matter your chosen style of design - be it modern, contemporary, rustic or classic - remember to keep your space open and work with clean lines. Keep ornaments and wall décor to a relative minimum. Do not overcrowd a room with too many furniture pieces. Make sure that the furniture suits the size of the space. Ensure good lighting. Go for soothing neutral colors and add splashes of color without overdoing it.

Vases

Decorative vases are for that finishing touch, and are the perfect home for fresh-cut flowers. So, whether in glass or ceramic, whether vintage or modern, whether large or small - vases are natural focal points. Translucent glass vases heighten contrast and provide a gleaming setting, while ceramic vases in amazing colors and interesting patterns add a touch of class. Whatever you choose, vases must be a part of any interior design.

White

White is a color/non-color that is one of the most elegant choices you can make. White is chic and comes in a wide range of tones and shades. White works in almost every setting and every style. If you envision a room with an open, clean and uncluttered feel, then use white on your walls, in your furniture and even in your lights. White goes well with everything, as it provides the perfect canvas on which to build with other colors.

X – Excel

According to the Cambridge dictionary, to excel means 'to do something very well or be highly skilled and be better than most others'. As with every field of life, you should always try to excel in design, and what better motive than when planning and designing your own home, so that it really is your castle, your haven and place of serene tranquility?

You

It is all about you and what you envision for your home, but let others guide you, teach you, and enlighten you. Definitely learn from experts and those with more experience than you. But remember to also stay true to yourself and your vision and dreams.

Zest

In order to succeed in designing your home you need enthusiasm. That zest will come across in the final outcome, so don’t relinquish it ever...

That's it for our A to Z glossary on interior design. Hope you learned something meaningful from it. Good luck on your stylish journey!
