TIPS FOR REDESIGNING YOUR BEDROOM

Needless to say, the room, where each one of us sleeps is one of the most important rooms in any home. The bedroom should serve as the perfect retreat, a haven that  provides  peace and tranquility. There are some who like to wind down with a good book, others who enjoy watching their favorite movie or series, many who love to work from bed, and finally there are those who use the bedroom purely and solely for a good nights sleep.

No matter what the bedroom is used for, it is  important that it meets the needs of its occupant. Remember, we spend approximately one third of our time sleeping, and if the bedroom is also used for working, downtime and watching TV, then we spend even more time there.  So this room must be just right!

The following are some tips from interior designer Annette Frommer to keep in mind when redesigning your bedroom.

De-Clutter

Clutter boggles the mind.  It muddles thinking and does the exact opposite of promoting peace and tranquility. It is important to invest in a proper closet, armoire or chest of drawers, so that clothes have their place and are not left just laying around. Unnecessary furniture - get rid of it.  It is crucial to understand the dimensions of the space you have at hand, in order to properly plan the layout and design.

Color Scheme

Since we are trying to promote a sense of calmness, the bedrooms color palette should be subtle. Annette Frommer loves pastels . As she points out Pastel colors are low-key since they have white mixed into them. They offer a  pale, soft and subdued presence. I love to use toned-down greens, blues, and aquas. An accent piece of furniture can add spunk to those wanting a spark of bright color in their bedroom.

Curtains

The final touch of any room is the window dressing, or curtains. Curtains not only screen filter the light in a room, they also regulate the climate.  From a design perspective curtains provide color, style and flair; they can accent and enhance the color of the bedroom or function as a soothing, calming and serene backdrop.

Sometimes it is necessary to use blackout curtains. These are appropriate for late sleepers, those working shifts, infants or seniors, or when a room does not have shutters or blinds. Blackout curtains also come in a vast array of stunning and sophisticated designs.

So, whether plain or lush, colorful or sheer, whimsical or elegant, whatever the circumstances and choice, curtains fabulously add to the ambience of the bedroom.

Bed and Bedding

Mattresses must be comfortable. And the size of the bed should be in proportion to the size of the bedroom space. Headboards  can add a wow factor if you go with a bold color. And quality bedding will not only contribute to a good nights sleep but also to the whole demeanor and mood of the room.

Lighting

Because lighting is so essential when designing a space, it is important to give it proper attention at the outset of any project! According to Annette Frommer lighting influences the way we perceive a room and the way it makes us feel.  There are many types of light fixtures to choose from and adding a dimmer switch is a great way of gradually lowering the light levels before going to sleep.
