Planning and Styling a Guest Bedroom by Annette Frommer

As a person who travels a lot (when there's no pandemic around, that is) and who hosts many guests from overseas on a regular basis, the concept of guest bedrooms is extremely important to interior designer Annette Frommer. Because She has stayed in guest bedrooms that were not especially welcoming, She has made it a point in her own home - and in the homes she designs - to plan and design guest bedrooms that guests will not want to leave.

As Frommer once said, "a guest bedroom doesn’t need to be posh, it is not a hotel. It does need to be welcoming, though, and to exude a soothing and relaxing ambience, while being practical at the same time." That's why a guest bedroom needs to include certain things. Here are Annette Frommer's guidelines for the perfect guest bedroom.

De- clutter!

A guest bedroom does not need to include many knick-knacks . On the contrary, it should be clean of unnecessary furnishings and decorative accessories, so that guests can have as much space as possible.

Bed and bedding

Frommer states: "I am a great believer in sleeping on quality sheets and using thick plush towels. Provide these for your guests. White sheets are always best – they indicate cleanliness." A gorgeous bed spread and enhancing scatter pillows are a must. Not only are they beautiful, they create a cozy and homey atmosphere. Blue is a great color to use in a guest room. It is a soothing and inviting . The patterned Roman shades (in the photo below) provide a sense of liveliness. Note the white sheets, pillow cases and duvet cover as well.

Bedside Table

A practical side table with drawers and an enchanting little compact white side lamp is perfect, no matter the style of your guestroom. In the phot o above, you can see minimalistic yet practical reading lights so that each guest can comfortably adjust their light and read without straining the eye.

Closet space

As we all know, living out of a suitcase can be a nightmare. Therefore, an empty closet or dresser is a must. Your house guests will be eternally grateful and happy to unpack their clothes and properly lay them or hang them. After all, it is much better than wearing wrinkly pants and dresses. Below is an example of a beautiful closet with mirror doors, to help your guests get ready in comfort. Though the room is not large, it offers all that a guest needs.

A desk and a chair

If the room is large enough, its always great to have a desk. Today people work while traveling, and a desk is better than working with a laptop in bed and on your knees. A desk can also serve as a quasi-powder room table for putting on makeup. Here's a nice touch: Place a card on the table with the Wi-Fi password alongside a universal phone charger. Your guests will adore you for life!

To sum up

Travelling can be tiring and unsettling, even if you are travelling for pure pleasure. However, by being a bit creative you can be the ultimate hostess and set up the ideal welcoming and soothing guest room, or as Annette Frommer calls it, "the ideal 'home away from home' for travelling friends and family."
