TIPS TO GUIDE YOU FROM A TO Z - PART 2

We continue with our A-Z home design glossary:

Invest

This does not mean investing only money for top quality products. Investing means spending time and much thought into defining your dream. And if you really want good results, as well as to save money, invest in an interior designer. The trained eye of a professional, together with his or her experience and expertise, will provide you with all that is necessary to realize your vision while creating a personal interior to suit your specifications and aspirations.

Journal

Keep a journal or, if you are computer savvy, keep an online type of journal of things you see and like in design. There is an endless array of magazines, websites, blogs, pictures, descriptions, ideas, and pointers out there. Shortlist those images that visually speak to you, or pointers that make sense to you. In this manner you will be better able to understand for yourself what your dream is while your professional will help you define the concept.

Kitchens

A kitchen to die for!

Kitchens are the soul of a home, and today they are also a place where we spend a whole lot of our time. We cook in the kitchen, we congregate around a kitchen table or kitchen island, we have our meals there and nowadays we even work in the kitchen with our computers. Replacing or even refreshing the cabinets, changing the countertop, or adding a backsplash can be the way to go. So indulge in a great kitchen.

Lighting

Most people do not truly comprehend that lighting is one of the most important features of designing a home since it influences the way we perceive a room and the way it makes us feel. From spotlights to chandeliers, from pendant lighting to sconces, the right kind of lighting will complement your interior design features and transform your home.

Metals

Today, many metals are used in product design. Bronze, copper and brass are the most popular. Chrome and stainless steel are still used, but the preference is towards warmer shades. I incorporate brass in many products for that elegant and sophisticated feel.

Neutrals

By definition, a neutral color is a color that does not have much intensity or saturation. Shades of white, ivory, beige, grey, taupe and black are considered neutral, among others. These have undertones and generally go with everything. Neutrals are classic, calming and they work with all styles. What is great with neutrals is that they are a base upon which to build with other colors (which can always be changed).

Organize

Organization is key to almost everything in life – and crucial in interior design. When designing a space, there are very clean-cut steps that need to be taken. Design objectives need to be outlined. Plans need to be conceptualized and prepared. A budget needs to be set and a timeline for the process of the project needs to be completed.

Paintings/Art

Paintings not only add color to a space, they offer texture and character. The painting that you hang behind your sofa or on your living room wall - especially if it is unique - will set you apart from everyone else and elevate your space into something that is singularly you. A stunning painting can act as a focal point and can bring the whole room together.

Quality

I am a great believer in using quality, high-end furniture. It’s natural to hesitate when buying costly furniture. However, in the long run it will save you money. Remember, the comfort, beauty, value and the imperishability of such items can’t be beat, and they usually tend to withstand the damage of time for much longer periods.

That's it for this part. We're not done yet, though, because there is also a third part to come...
